Eva Joly's Lab & Life
Where Research Meets Real Life
A scientist, healthcare professional, and advocate working at the intersection of biomedical research, clinical care, and health equity to reimagine how science serves real people.
This portfolio showcases the breadth of my work: from developing mast cell models and coding health data to responding as an EMT and advocating for disability inclusion.
I’m driven by a commitment to making science and healthcare more human-centered, equitable, and innovative.

Connecting to Change the Future: My Journey as a Patient Scientist
This past Monday was International Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Diseases Awareness Day , a time to raise awareness, share knowledge, and celebrate connection within both science and health communities. The theme, “Connecting to Change the Future. Our Future,” deeply resonates with me and my own journey. Learn more about this initiative at The Mast Cell Disease Society. Mast Cell Disease Society Awareness Day Logo I am sharing this a little later than planned because I wanted t

Developing Novel Bone Marrow-Derived Mast Cells to Model Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
This independent undergraduate research project established the first in vitro mast cell model at Saint Michael’s College, with the goal of creating a functional model to investigate Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and related disorders. I led all stages of the project, including:
- Model Development: Designed and optimized protocols to derive mast cells from murine bone marrow, maintaining viability and purity over several weeks in culture.
- Validation: Induced degranulation through calcium ionophores; validated activation by detecting expression using flow cytometry.
- Characterized mast cell identity through surface markers (e.g., FcεRI, c-Kit), confirming differentiation.
- Independent Execution: Managed all aspects of the project, including experimental design, troubleshooting, reagent sourcing, and lab maintenance, under limited-resourced conditions.
- Scientific Communication: Presented findings in a competitive regional research setting, earning second place among undergraduate posters.
This project not only contributed a new research capability to the college, but also deepened my commitment to studying immune dysregulation in underdiagnosed and poorly understood chronic conditions like MCAS.

Medical Assistant & EMT – Clinical Experience
Worked across urgent care and emergency settings, providing direct patient care, performing clinical procedures, and supporting providers in high-pressure environments. As a medical assistant, I conducted patient intake, vitals, EKGs, vaccine administration, and EMR documentation. As an EMT, I delivered pre-hospital emergency care, triaged patients, and collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to stabilize and transport individuals in crisis. These roles sharpened my clinical judgment, adaptability, and dedication to patient-centered care.

Visiting Scholar – Norris Lab, Medical University of South Carolina
Completed a short-term visiting scholar experience at the Norris Lab, engaging in discussions and observations related to research about hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). This visit offered early exposure to the lab’s methodologies, collaborative environment, and the work of the lab.

Engineering Intern – Anika Therapeutics
As an Engineering Intern at Anika Therapeutics, I worked in a GMP-compliant cleanroom (certified up to ISO 5) and led key validation and implementation projects across the facility. I was the lead on the company-wide rollout and validation of nitrogen gas testing systems, ensuring consistency and compliance across departments. Additional responsibilities included syringe plunger stress testing, autoclave validation, and quality testing using aseptic techniques. I also validated lab equipment and supported R&D as a research assistant, contributing to process development and testing of hyaluronic acid-based medical devices. This role provided hands-on experience in biomedical manufacturing, quality systems, and cross-functional teamwork in a regulated industry setting.

Quality Control Intern – Vernal Biosciences
Independently developed and executed technical projects to support operational efficiency and product quality in an mRNA-focused biotech startup. Authored and refined quality control and validation procedures in alignment with industry and regulatory standards. Validated and maintained laboratory and cleanroom equipment to ensure ongoing compliance and performance within a high-throughput production environment.
